Choir of New College Oxford

GEORGE HERBERT

George was born in Manchester in 2001, and his passion for music was kindled in earnest when he became a chorister at Manchester Cathedral. George spent four years at St John’s College, Cambridge, first as an organ scholar studying Music and German, and latterly as Assistant Organist. In these roles he accompanied the choir’s daily services, its recordings and its tours, he helped to train the choristers and he regularly directed the choir, including in its 2021 Advent Carol Service live on BBC Radio 3.

George joins New College after a year in London, where he was one of the organists at Westminster Abbey, Assistant Director of Music for HM Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace, a freelance member of the music staff at English National Opera, a peripatetic teacher at Tiffin School, and a schools' workshop leader with Pimlico Musical Foundation. George recently recorded his first album as a piano accompanist (Venus and Adonis by contemporary composer Rodrigo Ruiz with soprano Grace Davidson), and he regularly accompanies and sings with Tenebrae and Kantos Chamber Choir. In 2023 he won the Northern Ireland International Organ Competition, and he maintains a busy freelance schedule as an organist, pianist and singer.
