Choir of New College Oxford

Choristerships

The Director of the Choir, Robert Quinney, talks about all aspects of chorister life, and answers questions parents frequently ask.  Watch the choristers in rehearsal in chapel, and discover how new probationers are transformed into fully fledged choristers.

Parents often ask how choristers are selected, and how they fit their music into their school life.  Headmaster of New College School, Dr Matthew Jenkinson, and chorister tutor, Isobel Rose, share their insights into managing the choir and school timetables.

Choristerships in New College

Boy trebles have sung in New College Chapel since the college’s foundation in 1379.  The choir recruits boys aged between 7 and 13 from the local area, who attend New College School - a day school near the college. As full members of the choir they sing services in chapel and perform in concerts and tours at home and abroad, as well as making recordings. They enjoy substantial bursaries at New College School, and the musical education they receive lasts a lifetime, almost invariably leading to music awards at their secondary schools.

Parents interested in choristerships are encouraged to contact the director, Robert Quinney. Auditions are held each January for boys in school Year 2 (aged between six and seven), for entry as probationers in Year 3.
